These images are artist prints: a collaboration between myself and photographer, Simon Fraser. The work is an extension of my sculptural installation, ‘In one’s skin’.
As a female artist and a feminist living and working in a male-dominated culture, I believe it’s important to play with ideas such as what is it to be feminine, powerful and vulnerable. The action of my own body amongst the stage attempts to suggest the many levels of perception a woman must endure and shed in order to stay true to herself as she lives in a patriarchal world. Because I cannot avoid the male gaze, I agree to being objectified in my work – but on my terms.
Through our collaboration, Simon and I combined our personal perceptions of beauty, isolating our feelings around the issue, then coming together to create a bold and powerful examination of the feminine.
